By Train - Bangkok to/from Phuket
Trang is the normal arrival and departure town for train trips between Bangkok and Ko Lanta. However, an option, for those not worried about grueling travel schedules, is to take one of the daily train trips between Bangkok and Trang, get out at the Surat Thani (Ko Samui) terminal and transfer to a bus that takes you across to Phuket.
By Bus - Bangkok to/from Phuket
Daily bus service between Bangkok and Phuket is available for those looking for an inexpensive (and more scenic) alternative to air travel. The best option in Thailand for bus travel is always those found at the government (public) bus terminal. These tend to be more reliable and safer than private coaches booked through private companies.
Government buses are classified in four ways: normal class, 2nd class air-con, 1st class air-con and 24-seat VIP bus service. Prices range from 300 to 900 Baht per person and take 13-15 hours with several food and toilet breaks.
Buses depart daily from Bangkok to Phuket at 18:30 and from Phuket to Bangkok between 06:00 to 19:00. Normally showing up at the terminal gets you a seat on a bus but during peak season book the day before at the bus station to avoid disappointment.
The Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok ("Saai Thai Mai" in Thai language) is where you catch the government bus to Phuket. To get to the terminal simply jump in an air-con minibus numbers 503, 507 and 511, city buses numbers 30, 124 and 127 or taxi. Tell the drivers to "pai (go to) Saai Thai Mai".
Private coaches are also available for pick up from Khao San Road but prices tent to be higher and theft is more likely on these buses.
Phuket's government bus station is located in Phuket Town and is close to hotels and the passenger ferry to Ko Lanta but is a 30 minute bus or taxi ride to Patong, Karon and Kata beach areas.
By Road - Bangkok to/from Phuket
Driving between Bangkok and Phuket is also possible. Roads between the two cities, like most other places in Thailand, are well maintained and safe.
The simple road route starts on Highway #4. From Bangkok follow and pass the provinces of Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi and Prachuap-Khirikan. When you reach Chumphon turn right to Ranong. From Ranong, continue south through Kraburi and Kapoe Districts to Phang-nga Province. At Phang-nga the road passes through Kuraburi, Takuapa, and Thai Muang Districts before reaching the town of Kok Kloy. Then, cross the Sarasin Bridge to Phuket Island. The trip is approximately 870 kms.
