The best option in Thailand for buses is always the buses found at the government (public) bus terminal. These tend to be more reliable and safer than private coaches booked through private companies.

Buses depart daily from Bangkok to Krabi between 06:00 to 08:00 and from Krabi to Bangkok between 15:00 to 19:00. Normally showing up at the terminal gets you a seat on a bus but during peak season book the day before at the bus station to avoid disappointment.
The Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok ("Saai Thai Mai" in Thai language) is where you catch the government bus to Krabi. To get to the terminal simply jump in an air-con minibus numbers 503, 507 and 511, city buses numbers 30, 124 and 127 or taxi. Tell the drivers to "pai (go to) Saai Thai Mai".
Private coaches are also available for pick up from Khao San Road but prices tent to be higher and theft is more likely on these buses.
