FUND HELPS LANTA TSUNAMI FAMILIES IN 3 MONTHS AND CLOSES DOORS
Words can not explain how grateful these people are", say Opp Warangkanaa, Fund co-founder. "Being proud fishermen they don't want to rely on handouts. Thanks to the people who donated they can now fish and take care of their own families."
For the most part, fishermen on Ko Lanta have now been helped or will be soon by the various NGO and government agencies that are now (after a lengthy assessment period) dispersing funds on the island.
The Fund recognizes its role as a short-term, quick relief group that was set-up to disperse money quickly. Now that mandate has been met and the fund has been closed.
"In my view the last thing we need in Thailand is another layer of NGO's created from all these new grassroots groups", says Duane Lennie, co-founder of the fund, "I believe we have ample government and non-government organizations in Thailand to help people. Let's not dilute funds away from organizations that are set-up to do this professionally.
One month after the tsunami on 26 January 2005 the fund's first two fishing boats were launched at a ceremony to symbolize the renewal and continuation of the centuries old traditional fishing tradition in Thailand. The event was mentioned by over 2,000 news agencies world-wide from print and electronic feeds from Associated Press.
After the fund was closed the organizers personally helped Karsten Kaas and Soren Pedersen, in cooperation with DAVAL Danish Youth Hostel and private USA donor Shanti Sosienski, to locate a 6 family on-the-sea fishing farm community that was devastated by the tsunami. They generously donated the money to rebuild the homes and lives of these families with nets, tanks, pontoons, solar power and fish stock. The project will take 2 months to complete and on-going photos will be posted in the fund donations page.
The Schueler der Grundschule Bleibach, a group of school children from Germany, also helped out after the fund closed with a direct donation to a Ko Jum fishing family whose boat, motor and prop was washed away by the wave on December 26th. Photos will be posted in the above fund donations page.
